<div>Recently I took my very first vacation since I started working at Neoscape. I should say, since I started working in general. And a relaxing vacation it was not because &#8211; let&#8217;s face it &#8211; where&#8217;s the fun in that? No, I had to go big. Really big. The recipe went something like this:</div>
<div></div>
<div>- Take a 70,000 ton cruise ship. Majesty of the Seas is preferred</div>
<div>- Dump 2,000 music lovers from over 50 countries onto it</div>
<div>- Sprinkle in 42 heavy metal bands for entertainment</div>
<div>- Mix well</div>
<div>- Give them all a firm shove into the Caribbean to bake under the sun for 4 days</div>
<div></div>
<div>What we ended up with was the second edition of the 70,000 tons of metal, the world&#8217;s biggest floating music festival. An experience that I will personally never forget. It is a trip that takes all of your highest expectations and laughs in their face for being so small and fragile.</div>
<div></div>
<div>This festival takes all of the luxuries of being on a cruise ship and blends them together with all of the luxuries of being backstage at a full-out music festival. I ran into 6 different bands while exploring the ship before we even left port! Even managed to almost trip on the stairs while passing one of my favorite musicians of all time. I&#8217;m very graceful like that.</div>
<div></div>
<div>We were sailing from Miami down to the Grand Cayman Island and back again. After the ship departed the port of Miami it was music and fun around the clock. We had three stages: A small stage in a lounge, a medium-sized stage in a theater that was equipped with high balcony seating, and the large stage on the pool deck. Normally the ship has two open pools. For us, they drained one and covered it with a floor for standing room. Then they constructed the stage right in front of it. Two hot tubs and the second pool remained open for us to watch the shows from as well. It was a phenomenal set-up all around.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Our days were mostly filled with grabbing food when we could, enjoying the warm sun, and running from show to show until we were ready to collapse (am I allowed to mention the drinks? There were lots of those). Then most of us would congregate down in one of the lounges for karaoke every night until the early hours of the morning. Official meet and greets happened on the second day with all of the bands and there were a few work-shops going on on the fourth day for those who wanted to learn more about guitar and drum playing.</div>
<div></div>
<div>On the third morning we docked at the Grand Cayman and spent some time on the island. After a bit of dark cloud cover that morning, the day brightened up considerably and was gorgeous. There were four other ships docked near us. Some people headed off to visit a town called &#8216;Hell&#8217; (really, look it up!), others went to  see turtles, swim with stingrays, or explore a sunken ship just off the coast. After getting food, our troop ended up at the beach where we were stopped by curious tourists from another ship. They were under the assumption that we were one of the bands performing at the festival. We promptly, and logically, assured them that everyone on that boat was part of the entertainment. Then we went swimming. It is a true expression of will and power that I was able to drag myself out of the warm water when we had to leave to return to the ship. I only left with the promise that I would be back one day.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Back on the ship, I was back to running into band members left, right, and center every half hour or so. Something worthy of note was the fact that most of the musicians were incredibly social with their fans. One of my friends could not make the trip this year and was bummed about it. She asked only for an autograph from the drummer of Nightwish. Instead I was able to record a 20 second video with him giving her a personal hello after I told him about the predicament. And I wasn&#8217;t the only one able to snag a band member for something of this sort.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Another highlight was the social life among the fans. When you can gather people from 53 different countries from all over the world, put them out into the middle of the open sea, and witness them making instant friends with one another, you know you&#8217;re doing something right! There were no fights or squabbles and the staff absolutely loved having everyone on board due to a severe lack of complaints. The bond of music can be strong and many friendships were made throughout our time on the ship. Many of which will live on and be reunited next year when we take over the Majesty of the Seas again.</div>
<div></div>
<div>At the final tally, I caught 29 shows in all. A few personal favorites that stood out among the others for me were Nightwish, Kamelot, Therion, In Extremo, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, Eluveitie, Kataklysm, and Hammerfall. Yes, that&#8217;s a few.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Meanwhile, to keep my creative mind satisfied enough, I took to capturing lots of photos all throughout the journey even if all I had was a phone and an older small camera. Over 800 pictures were taken in all. Most of them will never see the light of day. Feel free to enjoy a few of them here while I give a large thank you to the organizers of this enormous event and everyone else who took part in it. Hope to be a part of this again in the future!</div>

<div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">First, some backstory: Every year for the Superbowl Neoscape has an official football squares sheet. Somebody from the office is designated keeper of the paper and accountant for noting and collecting any funds that may have been wagered. They are also tasked with answering the same questions over and over like &#8216;how many squares have I filled in&#8217; and &#8216;how much do I owe?&#8217; and &#8216;how many squares are left?&#8217;. Once 100 squares are filled out the random number generation for scores is made. We used to ask Nils to break out his Python script for random number generation and then fill in the numbers. Not a huge task, this football squares sheet creation &#8211; but could it be improved?</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">This year I thought that the Interactive Team © should make an iPad app to make the process easier. Simple things like the ability to copy/paste names, mark people as paid and highlight names so people could more easily track their numbers flowed easily during the design process. It also seemed to make sense to allow the user to add in any logo or team name. While the original purpose was for the Superbowl and it&#8217;s 4-quarter game, any 4-quarter game would work &#8211; like college sports. Also, as mentioned above, a running total of how many squares you&#8217;ve added also would make it easier than ever to run a squares game. After basic logic programming and a couple of in house focus groups we knew we had to add AirPrint ability and also allow emailing of sheets. It was also apparent that people wanted to use this for their own squares games. We gave it a name and a coat of paint and submitted it to the app store.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">If you are a football fan, degenerate gambler or know someone that is (Hickey) then this app is for you.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">We will certainly be using it in the office to sell squares as the Pats take on the Giants in an epic rematch.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">Please check it out, download it and let us know what you think.</div>

<p>As the newest recruit to the Neoscape fraternity, I saw the Tough Mudder as a great team building exercise, a way get to know the team away from the stresses of the everyday. My first serious training run was with Rob MacLeod, one of the founding partners of the company. It was with a certain amount of brashness (the kind that you regret 10 minutes later) that I thought to myself, “I’ll go easy on you, old man.” After spending the next hour looking at Rob’s feet pound away at the pavement in front of me—never tiring, never wavering—I realized the levity of my foolishness; this was going to hurt.</p>
<p>Soon my best friend became the white line: a thin strip of white paint on <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=bitumen&amp;um=1&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;client=safari&amp;sa=N&amp;rls=en&amp;biw=1358&amp;bih=988&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbnid=f4933ZRO7Q1wEM:&amp;imgrefurl=http://www.public-domain-image.com/full-image/textures-and-patterns-public-domain-images-pictures/hotmix-bitumen-texture.jpg-free-photo.html&amp;docid=2FeCQHjqqgyJ8M&amp;imgurl=http://www.public-domain-image.com/public-domain-images-pictures-free-stock-photos/textures-and-patterns-public-domain-images-pictures/hotmix-bitumen-texture.jpg&amp;w=2560&amp;h=1920&amp;ei=ewEDT_r2MoXc0QGf3vmnAg&amp;zoom=1&amp;iact=hc&amp;vpx=803&amp;vpy=347&amp;dur=431&amp;hovh=194&amp;hovw=259&amp;tx=146&amp;ty=81&amp;sig=101963128356389247080&amp;page=1&amp;tbnh=145&amp;tbnw=193&amp;start=0&amp;ndsp=30&amp;ved=1t:429,r:9,s:0" target="_blank">bitumen</a> that I would stare at mile after mile, transfixed, each step another step closer or another step further. Either way, it didn’t matter. Soon three miles became four, and six, then eight. Soon I would look forward to the pain. It felt good (like Rocky 1 except for the sweatpants); <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btPJPFnesV4" target="_blank">Eye of the Tiger</a> was the soundtrack to my life.</p>

<p>Here at Neoscape we are all into many art forms, from photography, film, music, 3d art and so on &#8211; the list is long. We consider ourselves a very flexible team, collaborating and working together no matter what our background is. In most cases a required task would have the in-house experts from that field do what they do best but sometimes they are busy doing something else and some of us have to jump in to the challenge.</p>
<p>Part of what we love about our job is coming up with solutions to our clients challenges within time and budget. In this particular case we needed to shoot live footage of people for an animation and everyone was busy. Erik Altman, our creative director, got his hands dirty shooting everything you see in one day with the help of some of our staff.</p>
<p>Typically we get the lights, green screen and camera ready and from there the real fun begins. We block where the people are going to be in the shot and then scout our employees to “model” for us. We shoot anything and anyone that moves or passes by. This day we shot project coordinators, 3d staff, owners, clients, sales crew and interns &#8211; basically everyone in the office (except Holmes) to get this done for the client.</p>
<p>At this point we are seasoned green screen “actors” and know what to do, what to say (not always what to say) and it is always a very fun thing to do. Doing this kind of work and participating in every aspect of it is very rewarding to all of us and that is why we keep doing it. And yes…we keep having fun &#8211; even at our own expense.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>With my son Cayden’s first birthday party quickly approaching, I had to make a decision to fish or cut bait. The deck design was in my head (and of course in 3d Studio Max) by this point, but based on other home improvement jobs with which I&#8217;ve been involved, I wasn’t sure what kind of problems I would run into and how long the project would ultimately take. Having spent three years of my life as a carpenter, I felt pretty confident that I could make it work in time. I decided to go for it. I ordered the lumber and took a personal day to get a jump start before the weekend. The weather was perfect for all three days so I could work continuously. It also helped with the time-lapse video.</p>
<p>Did I mention I was a carpenter? That was more than 10 years ago. My knees, hands, back, neck, arms, you name it were so sore after Day 1 that I didn’t think I’d be able to keep going. Although mentally draining, building architecture in 3d is definitely easier on the body.</p>

<p>A few weeks back I took a weekend trip to New York City. I used the trip as an escape from a few things that were going on in my life that I really just wanted and needed a break from. Now I know what you are thinking, New York is such a basic and simple trip, its not that big of a deal. While you may be right in your own thinking, I believe that you can simply get lost anywhere you’d like if you truly want to.</p>
<p>The only set plan was my trains back and forth from Boston, and staying at the Neoscape apartment. Other than that I was going there to experience total surprise. I essentially wanted to get lost in what I was going to do. It was a tough thing to actually perform and act out as like most people I am always on a set time, a true creature of habit. It was not the fact that I was going to a different place because I have been there numerous times, maybe it was the circumstances that surrounded it but it all felt different. </p>
<p>I walked around the city for three days straight, eating in random restaurants, seeing sights that I have seen numerous times while meeting and seeing people who were amazing to be around. I knew their whole life story within hours of meeting them, great people that I hope to run into again someday.</p>
<p>It was fun, different, and some would even say pointless (Altman). However it did show me that you can simply forget about any simple troubles you have in life and just check out some place that you don’t see everyday and learn how much we take for granted. As an artist I tend to forget, like most artists do, our minds are machines that sometimes do need to rest and stop for a bit.</p>
<p>I have already planned a trip during the summer to Montana to see an old friend, and I plan to use it the same way: as an escape. Not a vacation where most people think of what they are going to buy, the endless party nights, or the waiters bringing their booze to them on a beach. The type of trip where you don’t care what you see, the people you meet, or even the food you eat.</p>
<p>The world is full of amazing and new things that aren’t on internet recommendation lists or being reviewed by bloggers, go out there and find them. Experience your own Holden Caulfield moment and just go, escape your everyday life and go. Don’t plan too much, don’t think too hard and don’t make it into a big deal…buy the ticket and take the ride.</p>

Sorry to all for our social media delinquency as of late. Every year at this time our studio is inundated with must-have projects for ICSC and this year there seems to be more than ever as everyone looks to take advantage of the most interesting and opportunistic retail landscape in years. It&#8217;s an exciting time for us and our clients and we look forward to helping big deals get done in Vegas this year.</p>
<p>Once it&#8217;s over we&#8217;ll be back to our usual selves!</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve had a fascinating love affair with the iPhone 4 since I first got my hands on it last July. Yes I love the way it feels to the touch, it&#8217;s multitasking abilities, and its sweetly enhanced display that makes everything on the screen look so rich and magical. But by far my favorite new feature is the ability to shoot HD video, along with the many enhancements to it&#8217;s photo taking capabilities. For me the ability to capture something interesting on video or still at a moments notice is somewhat therapeutic, if not a tell-tale sign of severe ADD. It&#8217;s a way to lose myself, even if for a moment, in the little moments that make up the noise of daily life.</p>
<p>Recently I&#8217;ve taken to this therapeutic endeavor as a way to escape the doldrums of winter &#8211; and what a winter it&#8217;s been here in New England. We&#8217;ve had a major storm at least once a week since the year started, and while at first snow blankets the landscape with a beautiful white uniform, by the third or sixth blizzard it can begin having an adverse effect. Everyone becomes just a bit more touchy with every new flake that falls when there&#8217;s no room to navigate the narrow streets, or a walk to the corner store becomes a treacherous and even dangerous undertaking.</p>
<p>This climate-induced psychological transformation was the inspiration for the trilogy of video sketches titled &#8220;Snow Days&#8221;. Shot entirely on the iPhone using a cool kit of inexpensive lens attachments, and edited by acclaimed music video director Vassili Shields, this collection of shorts will leave you longing for spring.</p>
